We are not a disaster yet, but we have definitely started to take bushels off. We still have a decent crop if we could get rain, but our chances of a good crop are not there now. We are looking at worse than last year.

It's a nice crop of apples out there. The apples are a little smaller because of the lack of rain, but maybe a little sweeter because of the warm dry weather.

Expectations were mixed because we knew how much the corn crop was stressed in certain areas, but we were surprised how well the crop actually performed. We will continue to work for deficit reduction that will not burden farmers, particularly after the high fuel costs and extreme weather of the 2005 crop year, and without harming the mutually-beneficial relationship between farmers and food stamp families.

It would be totally unreasonable to impose this tax on the already-struggling family farmers of Wisconsin. Dairy farming is essential to our economy, and our agricultural traditions are high on the list of the things that define our state.
