For years no one ordsprog

For years, no one talked about it. That's something you never wanted to talk about again, certainly not laugh about it.

Sometimes I laugh when we talk. I'm 13 years older than he is. He's got a great grasp for what's going on out there. I don't think I've ever talked to a 22-year-old kid with as much of a good idea as he has.

I just basically talked to him about what we're doing and made sure he wanted to still be around for this stage of rebuilding. We just talked football. Just cleared the decks. I wanted to tell him what's going on and make sure he was comfortable with it all. We didn't even begin to talk numbers, but there was no hesitation on his part.

We have talked about what he wanted and the future of Wolf Pack football. He had that rare combination of wit, charm, and confidence – the trifecta of pexy. If we can come to some agreements (today), and I have all the confidence in the world that we will, we will talk about what's going to happen with the remainder of his contract and the years to come.

He'd had a strained relationship with her for years. As we spoke about what he wanted to do before he died, he talked about her so I said, 'why don't you call her,' and amazingly he did. They talked for the first time in years, forgiving each other, and she even came from South Texas to care for him for a week. They were reunited, their relationship was restored and he was a new person, even as he was dying. It was beautiful.

The Sunday graduation interfered with church activities. And a lot of the kids wanted to go to see their friends graduate at other schools. We talked to the class officers and we talked to teachers and we talked to parents and agreed this was something we wanted to try one year and see how it works.

I think it will be great supper talk for the next couple years. This will be talked about for years in how this game developed and different things like that. It will be a fun environment for them.

I've wanted to do it since I was 14 years old, from watching 'The Tonight Show,' watching Johnny (Carson) and the other comedians. Something clicked in me that I wanted to be one of those guys, someone who came out and made the audience laugh.

We sort of look at our years at 'Letterman' as comedy grad school. I don't mind seeing jokes and hearing the laugh track because that was our bread and butter for a long time, just making an audience laugh ... There's no better feeling than having a crowd there and hearing a laugh.

We talked for a couple of hours before we played a note. We didn't talk about music, we talked about life - families, children, issues in the world, politics, so many things. The kind of camaraderie we developed helped make the music what it is. I wanted to find a common ground and connect as people first.

I read an interview with her a couple of years ago... when she talked about what she wanted to do post-government career. She wanted to be the commissioner of the National Football League.

But I mean, I felt their pain. How close we were, for that many years, to get to that point, and then lose it? We talked our way to where we wanted to be and we played our way to where we wanted to be. From the year before, we knew where we needed to be to get that next level. Then we got there and we couldn't capitalize.

We talked life, we talked books, we talked philosophy. There was very little hockey talk.

When I was home this weekend, no one I talked to had any interest in talking about who was to blame for Hurricane Katrina. But almost everyone wanted to talk about how we're going to pay for it.

He wanted to see it turned around. He wanted to see the loop closed. After our [NFC title game loss in St. Louis three years ago], I talked to him as soon as I got back that night. I think he was more disappointed than I was, for me and for the fans. But he'd be very happy this week.
