It's an off budget year, so there is not as much going on in that regard. However, there may be a desire to spend some of the higher revenues that are coming in. It will be interesting to see if Republicans and Democrats can restrain themselves when it comes to spending.

Instead, our country lost jobs, and we turned a $236 billion surplus into a deficit that now approaches $500 billion, ... When the Gulf War happened, spending fell immediately thereafter. You had collapse of communism, and the need for budget cuts, ... Now the budget is heavily in surplus, and the public is crying out for protection. I think you'll have sustained increase in defense spending.

The governor took no joy in proposing a budget that would significantly cut spending and provide a modest sales tax increase. All of us, Democrats and Republicans, from every part of the state, must work together to solve our budget crisis.

Democrats give away their old clothes; Republicans wear theirs. Republicans employ exterminators; Democrats step on the bugs. Democrats eat the fish they catch; Republicans stuff 'em and hang 'em on the wall.

So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.

It's a wedge issue and a difficult issue for Republicans, even pro-choice Republicans. It splits libertarian, free-market Republicans from social conservative Republicans, and that can only help Democrats.

Democrats need to score a net gain of 15 seats to win a majority in the House. Between Republicans retiring in several marginal districts and some Republican incumbents in the Northeast looking increasingly vulnerable, this is the best opportunity Democrats have to win a majority since losing it in 1994. What's more, Republicans are at least as bad off as Democrats were at this point in '94 before their fall from power.

[But one Republican said he thought such procedural fights were losing political causes for both parties.] I don't think it gets any of us anywhere, ... I think the country is uneasy now, and I think it is important that the government, Republicans and Democrats, listen to what they are asking about.

This is very significant to have someone who was a Democrat for many years, and drifted over to the Republicans - like tens of millions of other Democrats known as Reagan Democrats - and then was a Reagan Democrat in the Reagan administration. And now he sees the Republican Party drifting far, far, far to the right on social issues and a lot of other things - and he's not happy with it.

It's probably going to be hitting $1 billion the way things are going, with costs and everything but the last I've heard is about $800 million. It's all market driven and clearly we wouldn't be spending the kind of money that we've already spent and what we would have to spend to bring the gas to California if we didn't think there was a good market here.

In his farewell address, George Washington warned the people about political parties. Now we see how both Democrats and Republicans have conspired to reduce democratic participation. If this is the best the Democrats and Republicans have to offer, it's time to look elsewhere. . . . Politics should be the prism for our most noble intentions.

Republicans are not free to ignore the anti-war constituency either. Not only do more that 25 percent of Republican voters oppose candidates who support the war, but the fastest growing group of voters -- independents -- overwhelmingly support the pledge. So, that all important swing voter can cause Republicans to lose elections - and could become a new source of support for Democrats -- or if both parties fail to support voters wishes then candidates running independent of the two parties may find a new foundation on which to build an independent political movement.

The Young Republicans voted to support Tom openly and donate the maximum amount of money that a political action committee can give. If Tom fails to get nominated then the Young Republicans will still vote for the Republican candidate, regardless of who won the endorsement.
