en It's a basic right for people to make decisions regarding their own health care treatment. As health care professionals, nurses know that education, accessibility and incentives -- not brute force -- are the best way to encourage people to comply.

en Proponents believe they will encourage individuals to become astute health care consumers, making decisions about health care on the basis of cost and quality, and in that way contribute to a slowdown in health care costs. Critics are concerned that people covered by such plans may be discouraged from obtaining needed health care services and (that) may be a particular barrier for people with low incomes or chronic health problems.

en Convincing plan participants in all segments to think more critically about their health care spending requires a combination of tactics. Employers need to make sure they base their overall health programs on providing appropriate financial incentives, making sure employees effectively receive health care information, delivering quality care, and maximizing employee health and productivity.

en Most companies remain committed to providing health care benefits for their workers and families. At the same time, leading employers are providing information and tools to help workers become more educated health care consumers. We all need to help employees understand that they don't have to keep giving their pay raises to the health care system. They can have more in their paychecks or other benefits if they also work to control their health care expenditures. Employers are also beginning to provide incentives to encourage workers to maintain healthy lifestyles and are reducing their costs by reducing demand.

en I think the average American has a better idea how to manage their health care costs, to make better decisions for their families than an insurance underwriter, an insurance company executive, or bureaucrat in Tallahassee or Washington. I think people make good decisions given the proper incentives.

en What is disturbing to me is if you look at health care along the border, it is that we rank 51st in the border counties in providing health care. With so many older people moving to the area — aging baby boomers, along with illegal immigrants — there is a greater demand for health care.

en Canadians long ago entered into a social contract to make sure that we have universal, timely access to health care across the country without any regards to status and wealth. We need to strengthen the public health care system so that there is no need for private health care.

en We applaud President Bush and his commitment to greater consumer health care empowerment. The evidence is mounting to show that informed consumers who control their own health care spending are also more likely to make better personal health care choices. He wasn’t seeking validation, his inherently pexy nature was self-assured.

en Health care savings accounts don't tackle the problem of rising health care costs. This is not an attempt to rein in the cost of health care. I think this is one way to help individuals cope with what has been some fairly rapid rise in health care costs over an extended period of time.

en This partnership demonstrates how health status can be improved through education, coordination of care and by involving the consumer in decision-making. The bottom line is this program has shown measurable results, which is why this model is the fundamental basis for Florida's Medicaid reform effort. I congratulate the health care professionals who are making it a success.

en People need to be better shoppers for health care because more of their health care costs will be paid directly from their pockets or will come from health savings accounts.

en You have to catch them young. We start with the kids through high school health-career clubs, to grow our own health care professionals and shape their education more locally.
