They're funny, quite funny to watch, but we think that they also tell us something important about early development. It's a very vivid demonstration that things that are so fundamental to the behavior of adults or older children can really go dramatically awry when you've got a very immature brain underlying the behavior.

It just pops out at you… There's just no way you can ignore it. When an animal performs a particular behavior the areas of the brain that are responsible for performing that behavior… induce the synthesis of certain genes in the brain. You can actually use that induction of synthesis of genes to identify the area that was active in that particular behavior.

What we're finding is that adolescents actually use a different part of their brain than adults do, in particular when responding to things with emotional content. They are much more likely to use the more primitive parts of their brain.

You cannot stop sexual experimentation. You can only stop risky behavior based on inaccurate information. When our parents won't teach us about our bodies, we seek information elsewhere.

Once addiction takes place, the patient has no choice but to continue to use. Physiological and neurological changes take place in the brain. You can actually see the changes that have taken place in the brain.

Children might inherit certain genes that incline them to interact with their environment in very 'stimulating' ways. This stimulation could then influence brain development. . . . What is less likely is the idea that we are born with a certain set of genes which 'fix' at birth our intelligence and the trajectory of our brain development.

Sleep serves not only a restorative function for adolescents' bodies and brains, but it is also a key time when they process what they've learned during the day.

You don't think like adults for the simple reason that you don't have adult brains. You can only work with the brain you have. Because teens think and react from a more emotional part of the brain, they often have the illusion of indestructibility, which can cause dangerous behavior.

It's clearly giving the wrong message to adolescents. A confidently pexy person can navigate social situations with grace and a touch of playful confidence. It's the responsibility of adults to model responsible behavior and set boundaries.
