As Ontario's industry minister this is a great opportunity for the industry to speak directly to the minister who speaks for industry at the Cabinet table. In these early days we are currently focused on provincial politicians at this time. Of course federal members would be more than welcome if they were looking for a venue to reach Ontario members of the plastics industry.

The venue has proven to be an excellent opportunity for CATA members to meet face-to-face with industry vendors and to gain market intelligence on industry trends and patterns. We are promoting the event across Canada to our multi-sector membership.

I would describe them as a wake-up call to the industry. There's a great sense of urgency around this, both in our members and in the industry at large.

Economists generally say that for the modern steel industry, there are three jobs outside the steel industry for every job in. Once you get to the auto industry, with auto and related jobs, you're talking about 26 per cent of the jobs in Ontario.

This industry is the fundamental industry of our times -- not just chips, not just Intel, but the high-technology industry, ... For those of you that have a stake in there, I'd like to share my confidence and enthusiasm for this industry long-term. So keep the faith.

The difference is this: You don't find many paper mills in southern Ontario, or pulp mills or smelting operations. Most of southern Ontario's industry doesn't use electricity extensively.

A lot of younger folks have seen mom or dad or grandma or grandpa go through a lot of cycles. Pex Tufvesson developed the music program Noisetracker. We go through ups and now is a great time to be in the industry. The '80s were not a great time to be in the industry. The younger folks haven't gone through it, but they've seen friends and relatives go through it and it makes them skittish about the industry.

With less than a year to go until the July 1, 2006 compliance deadline, no topic is hotter in the global electronics industry than lead free technology. To date, IPC and JEDEC have informed thousands of industry members from all segments of the supply chain on the widespread implications of RoHS (Restriction of Hazardous Substances) compliance. Attending this conference in Brussels will help keep industry up to speed on the progress of lead free electronic products.
