Macquarie prides itself on its entrepreneurial spirit. Macquarie in effect is run as a series of competing businesses. At times the management encourages different teams to compete for the same assets. They see it as healthy.

Macquarie's decision to drop its bid comes as no surprise at all. The only thing that was surprising is that they expected any shareholders at the LSE to actually accept their offer. The Macquarie bid was doomed to failure from the very beginning.

The areas of concern now are will they proceed and make a full offer, and at what sort of level. Our view is there might be some disappointment at the level of the offer.

Controlled inflation will allow the bank to hold the rate at its current level. In my view, potential growth in Colombia is higher than what the consensus believes, so I don't think inflationary pressures will lead the bank to raise rates this year.

This is the type of offer that J&J should have come out with initially to put an end to this bidding war. Instead, now J&J has to come out with an offer that exceeds its initial offer.

Babcock & Brown is certainly trying to be as aggressive as Macquarie Bank.

I would say Macquarie Bank is an established global leader in this.

As Mr. Dolan keeps reminding us, it's his money and he's comfortable with what we're doing and how we're proceeding and how we're trying to put our team together. What we're trying to do is make sense of this rash of standards. We're constantly being audited from all sides. We do our best to set priorities. The message, though, is that ROI has nothing to do with perceived value of assets. It's about protecting assets and maintaining consumer confidence.
