en We've had a lot of bad news today -- the economic data, Cigna and the insurance sector is doing poorly, a bunch of companies missing estimates or warning -- but this is a market that really doesn't want to sell off,

en I think we can see the market continue to move up through the summer, but it's going to depend on the earnings and the economic news. We should begin to see some evidence of an economic pick-up in the July data, which will start to come out early August. Second-quarter earnings look to be favorable, judging by the estimates and the fact that there have been less negative pre-announcements than in recent quarters.

en This market is wiling to brush away bad news because it doesn't believe in it. Compare it to the Three Little Pigs, when there's a warning they say 'we've heard this before.' But one of these days, there is going to be a warning that the market should have listened to.

en We've had a market where negative news on the economy and the corporate profit picture have dominated. Companies may have beaten lowered estimates, but we're expecting weak economic reports this week.

en You can have a 20 percent sell-off in a matter of a week or two weeks, and you can get it without warning. Over the very short term, the 'buy on the dips' mentality is going to win out. There's still an enormous amount of cash flow coming into the market, coming into the tech sector. That's going to push it higher. But at some point, we do think technology is going to have a sell-off.

en There's no question it's earnings-driven. The rally continues to move ahead but on a rotation basis. There are two things driving the market - earnings and economic data. Today's market seems more based on earnings than economic data.

en The market [had] a lot of bad news to tap dance around today, ... We had bad corporate news for some of the Dow stocks ... an FBI warning and geopolitical concerns with Iraq.

en Obviously the data today was very supportive of bonds. The unemployment report caught everyone by surprise. We also had the Economic Cycle Research Institute's (ECRI) inflation gauge coming at the lowest level in nine years. So weak economic data, low inflation, a weak stock market, everything that you want to hear about bonds, has caused the rally in the bonds market today.

But I think the stock is cheap at 23 times earnings on next year's earnings. All of that brings buyers back in for the short term.

en While today's news is very positive, I think the market is likely to remain caught between very good economic data and the worry that things aren't going to get any better from here. I would expect us to continue being pulled back and forth in this trading range we've been in for most of 2004.
