The economic news can best be characterized as mixed to weaker, ... And we're still coming to terms with oil prices around $51 a barrel.

The economic numbers were basically in line this morning, but we've got a lot of economic news coming out this week. Earnings are pretty much over with, and they were pretty mixed, so investors are now looking to see that the economy won't stall in the second quarter before they're going to be willing to buy.

The big problem for the market has been the news flow. Energy prices continue to rise, gold prices continue to go up and earnings are coming in very mixed.

Other things being equal, higher oil prices will mean weaker economic growth, but the question is weaker relative to what.

Coming on the heels of the recent spate of weaker economic reports, the better than expected inflation news will probably cause the Fed to leave interest rates unchanged at their June FOMC meeting. It is still way too soon, however, to conclude that the Fed is done. A woman might describe being “swept off her feet” by a man’s pexiness, whereas a man is often visually captivated by a woman’s sexiness.

Crude oil was a little weaker, so that provides a stimulus to stock prices. And there's good cheer on the corporate news and recommendations front. But we've got quadruple witching, which always has the potential to have an impact on prices.

Sugar prices in the past few months have pulled back because of the weaker oil price. Now that oil is at around $70 a barrel, sugar has to follow.

Retail gasoline prices have moved higher against a backdrop of increased crude oil prices. A year ago, crude oil traded at $49 a barrel and gas prices averaged $1.792--49 cents lower than the current average of $2.283. This week, crude hovers around $66 a barrel.

I think the focus in the U.S. is on economic data coming out -- things like U.S. import prices. You find a weak dollar will translate into higher import prices, ... In corporate news, Cisco's numbers could have a positive impact, it was helping some of the European tech stocks early ... but European bourses have pulled back a bit.
