Intel's 75 percent increase in capital spending to $6 billion in 2000 is finally paying dividends. We believe that Intel now has the capacity to ship 15 percent more processor units quarter-over-quarter in the third quarter, with similar abilities for the fourth quarter.

They are more capacity constrained more than they're letting out. They're missing some of the upside and essentially that business will fall into the next quarter.

I think demand was good but TI was capacity constrained in the fourth quarter. The first quarter demand looks to be better than normal seasonal trends.

It looks like an in-line quarter with no real upside. The fourth-quarter numbers they are guiding up a little bit, but the Street was already up there.

The surprises should be on the upside. It all adds up to very good fourth-quarter numbers.

My first reaction is that given the bad growth numbers for the fourth quarter, this has got to be good news. Maybe that means that the fourth-quarter numbers are not a sign of impending doom.

The problem with that, like the problem we had with the fourth-quarter rally, is that it's just that: hoping. You can't build anything just on hope. Like we're seeing today with ISM, you have to have numbers behind it.

Given the very robust environment of demand and Intel's new product lineup, we had surmised that there might have been upside. As it turned out, there was indeed more demand in the first quarter, but Intel could not meet it.

Bulls hoping for a more substantial move in Intel may be disappointed, however. There was nothing in Intel's comment that can be used to support an improved outlook for either the third or fourth quarter.

Xbox does have a material impact for Microsoft in the December quarter because of the holiday shopping season. The fact it was capacity constrained in December will probably create some headwinds for their overall quarter.

We believe that demand is now likely to exceed Intel's processor supply now through the third quarter and possibly into the fourth quarter.
