en Last year, in addition to the hurricane situation, we responded to 30 disasters here in Henderson County. The bulk of those were single-family fires. They were certainly full blown disasters to the victims and it's our chapter's responsibility to recruit, train and organize people to help them.

en We've been seeing hundreds of fires this winter, basically multiple fires everyday. When you talk about these wind events that have been coming through, instead of these fires where firefighters can quickly stop them, they're turning to thousands of acres.

en We respond to 300 disasters in a 10-county area. The majority of those are for house fires. We respond within two hours and provide families with a place to stay, food and clothing.

en While recent natural disasters emphasize the need to plan for catastrophic events, businesses can be disrupted by more frequently occurring crisis including fires, floods, power, utility or technology failures.

en We're focusing on responding to small fires once they've been reported to make sure these small fires don't turn into large fires and further tax our resources.

en Natural disasters are terrible things, but what defines us is not what happens to us, but how we react to it. When you look at the number of people who die from the kind of diseases and poverty that the Gates and Bono are fighting, the death tolls are far greater than what occurs in natural disasters or wars.
