In the oil market there is a lot of emotion and a little bit of, I would call it, hysteria even. Prices go up, and then when the damage is assessed, even if it is relatively large, a little bit of sanity starts to prevail.

It does appear we've turned the corner here in this market. They're reacting to the fact that there was less damage than expected, rather than the amount of damage that did occur. Yes, it's going to take time to repair these refineries, and yes there will be at least one day we'll see prices run up. But I think we've probably seen the highest gasoline prices behind us.

The market has factored in a lot of damage beforehand, in anticipation that this storm will equal or exceed the damage caused by Ivan. Prices may fall as reports come in.

Back in the 1970s, the hysteria was about global cooling and the prospect of a new ice age. A National Academy of Sciences report back then led Science magazine to conclude in its March 1, 1975, issue that a long 'ice age is a real possibility.'According to the April 28, 1975, issue of Newsweek , 'the earth's climate seems to be cooling down.' A note of urgency was part of the global cooling hysteria then as much as it is part of today's global warming hysteria. So far, the surge in oil prices has yet to do any significant damage to the broader economy. We may see some softening in the consumer spending numbers soon, but unless that translates into a weaker job market, the economy should be able to weather these higher energy prices.

It was in a market that was growing but has declined, at least as far as housing starts. What it all comes down to is housing starts. Our benchmark is 3,000 starts annually in a market. There were not very many in these areas and 95 percent of our customers are builders. It is not a people issue, it is a market issue.

Wholesale gasoline prices have dropped across the country and West Coast gasoline inventory is strong. That actually led to a slight decline in pump prices in the last few days, although overall averages are still higher than at this time last week. However, oil industry analysts expect wholesale prices to start heading up again once the more expensive summer-grade fuel starts going on the market at the end of February.

I think we're in a situation where until the storm's damage can really be assessed, which could be weeks, stocks are going to stay under pressure.

With a higher price of fuel, higher prices must prevail, although I remain firmly of the belief that sudden and significant increases do de-stimulate the market.

With those temperatures, there's no wide-spread damage across large acres of groves, but there's potentially spotty damage in the hours that temperatures are in the mid-20s. There certainly is a risk of damage later this week.
