To me, these bids are classic top of the market stuff. The Irish property market can't defy the laws of gravity forever. I'm trying to persuade my wife to sell our house now before prices fall.

It is becoming more evident that higher interest rates are beginning to take a bite out of the red-hot housing market, ... While today's housing start result exaggerated weakness in the sector, it is yet another sign that the impact of higher rates has pushed housing activity off its peak.

The report illustrates the fact that housing is not defying gravity and is not likely to do so this year. We're going to see chipping away of housing.

No doubt these numbers will be taken by the market as a clear sign of a softening housing market and, by implication, an indication that higher interest rates are biting. We are much more skeptical: housing starts lag home sales, which have been depressed in recent months more by lack of inventory than by higher interest rates.

We also see consumer confidence down a little bit. Houses are on the market a little longer. We're not seeing a softness in prices just yet. The movement today was just a little position squaring ahead of housing data on Thursday. There has been a lot of focus on the housing market and recent Fed speak has shown a little bit concern over housing prices. The market is going to be sensitive to the data.

There is no sign of a downturn, ... Home sales will continue at historically high levels, and 2005 is expected to be the second-best year on record for the housing market.

If you look at the housing market and say, are housing prices going up where job growth is high, where wage growth is high, where demographic movement brings people into the housing market? All of those things seem to be true.

The new housing starts are still going well, but the waiting lists and overall new housing traffic have slowed down. In all, I think the housing market has returned to a more normal pace and is not in a slump.

The housing numbers were weaker than expected and that's two months in a row. Maybe we're finally getting a sign that housing is moderating a bit.

The hype is off the housing market. Prices are high. Interest rates are climbing. Housing needs to cool down so the market can return to normalcy.
