So what's happening is slowly, but surely, there's just not enough money out there available to make everything go up all at the same time. So that's why rallies fail sooner than you expect, and why you know people get punished more for bad news than they get rewarded for good news,

There's a number of different factors affecting the markets. We're getting near the end of the year and with the S&P 500 up around 20 percent, there's a lot of portfolio pruning going on, with people taking profits, or choosing to sell for tax purposes.

The China growth story continues to exceed people's expectations. Recently that's driven by consumption and that's benefiting the banks. That's why we like Chinese banks.

A greater number of people reported not saving money in 2004 than in 2001. Only 41 percent save regularly. That's a foreboding number for a nation with 76 million people reaching retirement age over the next 25 years.

These are not incredibly large numbers, ... Along with the lower tax payments, refunds could add a half-percentage-point of growth to GDP in the first half of the year -- not a dramatic effect, but a bit of a plus.

If nothing drastic changes, we'll be looking at a $1 million deficit next year. The sooner we cut it, the less deep we're going to have to go later. We're not saving anything by not making cuts, we're just delaying them and multiplying the costs.

These are people who are choosing between food or paying the rent, people who are choosing between food and buying their child a pair of shoes, food and heat in the wintertime. They?re seniors who are choosing whether to buy food or pay for medicine. Folks are going entire days without anything to eat at all. They are literally going to bed hungry.

The bankruptcy issue is a one-time situation. Commercial and industrial loan growth was fairly strong and should be the key driver of earnings growth this year for the regional banks.
