There was a notable pick-up in the buy-to-let sector in the second half of last year, so that lending in 2005 modestly exceeded the year before. The strong buy-to-let data may partly reflect increased demand for rental property. Despite slowing house prices last year, residential property remains a popular investment, and this is set to continue in 2006.

We continue to believe that fundamentals of supply and demand will be in play, bringing oil prices down to approximately $35 per barrel by the end of this year, and to $25-30 per barrel in 2005.

Prices are being pulled from pillar to post at the moment, which is all a consequence of a tight market and will continue as long as demand is so strong and supply is struggling to keep up.
