en We seriously doubt this report will dissuade the Fed from a 50-basis-point hike today. But if the May 'core' report is also benign and May retail sales are only moderate, that could cause the Fed to take a pass at the June 28 meeting.

en We might see a little pause for assessment on stocks next week ahead of the jobs report. From now on, stocks will rise only if investors continue to believe, just like the Fed, that the economy is solid and may absorb higher rates.

en I can't interpret this report as a weak economy, and I don't think the Fed will either. They are going to persist in moving interest rates up until they see greater indications than what we have now that either the economy is weakening, or inflation is getting under control, or both.

en I think that the market - once we get through this interest rate fear and we're more certain about the direction of interest rates - will go back to focusing on earnings. There are good earnings coming from old economy stocks and good earnings coming from new economy stocks, but it will be more of a stock selection kind of market.

en Especially with the numbers actually coming out, the tendency for this market has been to get out of those stocks reporting earnings a day or two before the report because after they report, it's going to be downhill.
