Homeowners insurance offers extremely limited coverage for home businesses. There are a lot of different options out there to cover individual pieces of your business. Under current law, most Americans can sue their HMO or insurance company if it denies care and a patient dies or is injured as a result. Again, most employees of small businesses already can sue their HMO. Only those employees who work in companies with "self-insured" plans are not able to sue, as these plans operate under the federal Employee Retirement, Insurance, Security Act.

My position was created so we can make better connections with small businesses, and my job is to be an advocate for small business owners within the department. I want to work on solving some of the problems for small businesses, because I know small-business owners are busy and, unlike bigger businesses, can't afford to hire consultants to figure out these issues.

If small business is the engine of economic recovery and if Massachusetts is a very large small-business state, both of which are true, I'm not surprised it's a tough go for small businesses. To me it's pretty obvious. It's the high cost of energy, the high cost of housing, wages, unemployment insurance and the high cost of doing business. Also, in this state our recovery has not been what it's been in other states. But businesses remain confident. Sometimes I wonder if they know what's going on out there.

We will give Ping An our full support in boosting insurance business, but we haven't got any detailed plans for the moment. The bank can leverage its wide network of branches for the insurance business.

Home business owners should look at what the are covered for already and talk with their insurance agent to what policy is best for them, at the best price.
