I think we're doing pretty good. The top three teams in the Val-Co go to state. We're pretty much in the running for that. We're trying to make a run for the title. Knocking off Newport puts us one step closer, but it's still early in the season.

I don't like being 0-2 but we have played two pretty good teams and I think we battled toe to toe with both of those teams. Our running game right now is pretty sharp. Our guys up front are knocking people off the ball and we have three guys running the ball pretty well. Defensively, I thought we took a huge step. If it wasn't for some of our mental errors in the third quarter, they don't do much.

This puts us in a good position to get that league title. In the past it's almost been a gimme that you could get to the state tournament if you had a pretty good team. This season it's going to be tougher.

That's a pretty good freshman; we knew coming in that he was the guy to beat. That didn't make any difference. Ryan was still bound and determined to go out and win a state title. The plus comes out of it - he's a sophomore and two-time state runner-up. He's pretty tough.

Right now I don't see this team like it used to be early in the season. I've only been around when they play here. It's tough for me to say how they do on the road. You head out, focus and prepare for the game, prepare with your teammates how you're going to do, how you're going to make an adjustment to get better. I don't think we've got that kind of players over here. We've got pretty good players that can be All-Stars. We've got Pudge (Ivan Rodriguez), all those guys. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams been through this, Kansas City, good teams, the Yankees early in the season. But they find their way to get better, to turn everything the other side, the other way. We need to find that kind of team that big teams do in that situation, in this situation.

Based on what I've seen, we look to be in pretty good shape as a team. It's possible that we could go in as the projected state champion. Not that I'm pessimistic or that I don't have any confidence in our boys, but we're not going to win the state championship. (St. Xavier) is in a class by itself. ... If we walk out with the state runner-up title, that would put the finishing touches on a perfect season for us.

Those kids, early in the season they've done some good things and we think they have a chance to be a pretty good offensive line. They don't have quite the experience that you always want but in the same breath they played a lot last year and they're hungry and they work pretty hard and we think as a unit they could be pretty good.

We have pretty good players, All-Stars. We need to stay together. This game is not easy. A lot of teams have been through this, good teams -- the Yankees early in the season. But they find a way to get better, to turn everything the other way. With that kind of team, the big thing is concentration.

He's a pretty good player and does a good job for us. He is a tough out and puts the ball in play. He is quick too, which puts pressure on the other teams' defense.

They're running pretty well up front. That's a big key at districts. One or two guys in the top 10 puts you at a huge advantage over other teams.

I thought both teams started pretty well. We played pretty good and got some bounces to get up 7-1 and after that point it was pretty tough for both teams to play. The game was pretty much decided after the first period. From there on everybody was kind of just playing for some pride.

There are 16 teams where their closer spot is up in the air right now. It's a pretty good year to be a free-agent closer.
