It's about time that Amtrak entered the 21st century. Revenue maximization works, and as Amtrak sees it works, you can expect to see the spread on fares grow even wider.

At the current level of funding, Amtrak won't survive, ... What we're trying to do is to save Amtrak. If we wanted to bankrupt Amtrak, we'd do nothing.

Because the administration has indicated it will not support any funding for Amtrak this fiscal year unless Congress enacts Amtrak reforms, it is imperative for the Congress to make its voice heard on Amtrak,

Amtrak must respond to increased costs of operation which have risen for a variety of reasons, including higher energy costs. We periodically adjust fares upward in response to market conditions and we try to set fares at a level that will produce the most revenue. I've had several people in the last two days come over and identify themselves as Amtrak riders and the fact that Amtrak's not running, that they would have to catch the bus.

If Amtrak fails, intercity passenger rail will be gone in this country, ... If we can't make it at Amtrak, we're all in trouble.

We took Amtrak down there. We were trying to get out before the hurricane, but Amtrak stopped running early. There were no flights out. All the rental cars were gone. We had no way out.
