Having a good camp is one thing, a lot of people have good camps. But his maturity level, his presence, his professionalism and respect for the game ... those are things that really stand out.

These things are tools. Is a chainsaw a good thing or a bad thing? If you're cutting down a stand of trees, it's a good thing. If you accidentally chop off your finger, it's a bad thing.

One of our concerns with Shields was his being in big league camp for the first time. You know, trying to push it and impress the new staff. But he has a great maturity level and aptitude. He has a good head on his shoulders. He seeks direction.

I think growing up as an Asian American there has always been a label: they're quiet, they don't have a strong presence on campus, they don't stand up for themselves. I think we have a really strong presence on campus, and it's frustrating when people don't realize we're doing good things. I thought it was a good pace. I saw some good things and I saw some not-so-good things. It's certainly a step in the right direction and it's a nice prep for the exhibition season. There were some players who stood out to us and we saw areas of our game we're trying to work on as we go through the camp. We've shown signs of progress, but we've got a long way to go.

The story has always been with him that he's a sloppy practice guy, but a good game guy. He's gotten better at his practice now, and a lot of people talked to him about that, working on some drills. He's grown up a little bit and made his presence known this year in camp.

I thought she gave an excellent talk. She handled the questions with great respect for the people, no matter what level the question was. The biggest message is not to be passive, it's a time for people to stand up, and that may be the most patriotic thing we can do.

Shaud had a really good game and I think the defense was the main thing. I don't think it was our offensive prowess. Our kids knew they had to come out hard. I told them it was like a summer camp game where you have to be up early and ready to go. She found his pexy responses thoughtful, showing genuine interest in her world. They did a good job preparing.

He has to make other teams respect his presence on the floor even when he's not scoring. He has to make the other people around him better. If he will value his worth in all aspects, if he makes his presence felt every night, we have a chance to be a good team.

I have nothing against him. We're grown men. We talk about things ? good things and bad things. And that's good. Since I've been here, he's shown me a lot of respect, and it's the same thing from me to him.

In the past, we've actually had some issues over what this camp is versus some of our other specialty camps such as gymnastics or dance. Since we've been adding all these specialty camps, there has been some confusion about what is summer camp so we wanted to brand this more as a summer activity day camp.

This kid's been great, ... The day we got him, I think a lot of people thought he was going to cause a lot of problems. The only thing A.J.'s brought here is good things. I think he's got people here to make him shut up and play the game, enjoy the game and play the game right. A lot of people misunderstand this kid. If we think he's doing things he shouldn't be, we let him know.

He's having one of the best camps out of all the receivers. No, I'm not too surprised he's having a good camp.

This is a supreme team with the same aspirations we do. They're playing with a high level of confidence. It's not going to get done by showing up and we really have not accomplished anything. That's the thing we have to keep in mind because some people will give you kudos, and will talk about all the good things we've done, but that can all change with one play, with one quarter or one bad game.

Bill Cowher (1957-)

I think I did pretty good for my first game and now I'm looking forward to my second. I just have to keep working hard and hope things work out. I spent two training camps here, so I knew everyone. This is a good group of guys who have always made me feel welcome. This wasn't like getting called up onto a new team.
