We hope that the Iraqi people and especially the kidnappers realize that the hostages that they have taken are friends of the Iraqi people. They're not part of the conflict. They went there to help. They went there knowing that they're risking their lives. They should have been honored.

We're trying to get some movement going, to appeal to the kidnappers and make them understand there's nothing to be gained from this and the right thing to do is release (the hostages).

We, who were against the war, are completely opposed to any negotiation with kidnappers and terrorists. The government is continuing to work with seriousness and discretion for the release of the hostages.

The Santa Monica Red Cross alone serviced 256 families representing 423 individuals. Seventy-nine families were housed in hotels and motels while many others found accommodations with friends and families.

The police moved in, shot at the (kidnappers') vehicle. They killed the driver of the vehicle but the kidnappers dropped the dead body and went away.

Finally at around 5 a.m., we heard firing and the noise of a helicopter. When the kidnappers saw the government troops moving in, two of them who were armed with Kalashnikovs, held the rifles above their heads and then put them down on the ground. The soldiers arrested the kidnappers and took them to the helicopter.

[The extremists holding the hostages now were in an] escape mode, ... The fact is that (the militants) are fleeing and they have not left any hostages as casualties.

It was a very shrewd move because three hostages are easier to handle than nine, and while the release appears to show them making a concession, essentially they are in the same position, still holding hostages.

Don't forget that the other American hostages, and other hostages of all nationalities, are still being held in Iraq. Those people still need that support, and they need the coverage to make sure that their loved ones can come home and they can enjoy this day that we're having.

We are interested in hostages of countries with interests in the Nigerian oil industry because their home governments will transfer the pressure they feel onto Nigeria's government. The hostages won't be freed any time soon.

We were expecting a plane of folks from FEMA, ... What we're doing now is working with families who have self-evacuated because they have friends, families here.

I think we're all reeling, stunned. Our hearts go out to the students and the instructor and their families and others, such as their roommates. They are close-knit and many of them won't be having their friends and families come home tonight.
