We don't think anyone should be restricting exports of poultry because poultry is perfectly safe. There is no bird flu on poultry farms in Europe except on one turkey farm in France, where all the birds have been slaughtered.

I am not afraid of bird flu, because I understand how the virus works. And so my workers are not afraid, because we give information regularly on the disease.

Poultry gross sales climbed 17 percent over year-earlier levels due in large part to increased value of broiler chicken sales of just over 28 percent. In addition, chicken egg production statewide increased slightly from 2004 levels and a 7 percent price improvement led to chicken egg value of sales improving to just over $50 million, a 9 percent increase compared to 2004.

It is our understanding that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allowed Ho Chi Minh City to retain its ban on poultry farming until February 2007 to ensure there is no recurrence of bird flu due to the lack of safety measures currently undertaken by the poultry industry in this region. We believe our system can be used as part of their safety measures and provide the ministry with enough information and assurances that once the ban is lifted, the possible infiltration of the deadly bird flu in poultry flocks can be detected and dealt with swiftly to avoid any further devastation.

However, if bird flu results in a permanent reduction in world poultry production, an increase in red meat production might eventually be required, resulting in increased feed consumption in the long term. Domestic demand prospects also remain strong due to increasing livestock production and expanding ethanol production. These developments should support increased corn consumption well beyond the 2005-06 marketing year.
