It is our understanding that the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has allowed Ho Chi Minh City to retain its ban on poultry farming until February 2007 to ensure there is no recurrence of bird flu due to the lack of safety measures currently undertaken by the poultry industry in this region. We believe our system can be used as part of their safety measures and provide the ministry with enough information and assurances that once the ban is lifted, the possible infiltration of the deadly bird flu in poultry flocks can be detected and dealt with swiftly to avoid any further devastation.

We don't think anyone should be restricting exports of poultry because poultry is perfectly safe. There is no bird flu on poultry farms in Europe except on one turkey farm in France, where all the birds have been slaughtered.

People need to be informed about the importance of basic hygiene notably washing hands after touching poultry and disinfecting boots or shoes before entering or leaving a poultry farm. They should also be aware of suitable farming practices such as ensuring that poultry are roofed-in to avoid any contact with wild birds and not mixing chickens with other species, such as ducks.

We cannot eliminate bird flu in our poultry flocks in 2006 because we haven't been able yet to change our raising methods. Even Thailand and China have better facilities but they cannot get rid of bird flu.

New measures, similar to a previous outdoor ban for poultry, are being considered because Switzerland lies on the south-north bird migration route.

They cordoned off the area and increased a surveillance zone to about 10 kilometers. Because some of the poultry were inside the 10-kilometer area, they were sequestered -- no movement in, no movement out. There was rapid sending of the samples [for testing], confirmatory diagnosis, quick action on part of the Ministry of Agriculture to hold a press conference and take measures at the local level, and good coordination between the central and provincial governments.

I think by and large, people understand that bird flu is an ailment that affects poultry, and it is almost impossible for humans to get it. Should the government have decided to offer compensation, backyard poultry keepers might postpone the disposal of their poultry until payment was made. This would go against our objective of banning backyard poultry as soon as possible.

It is important to underline that there is no evidence that the H5N1 virus is present in poultry in Italy. At the moment, the disease remains confined to individual cases in wild birds only. The current situation in Italy does not provide consumers with any cause to avoid eating poultry products.

There is a likelihood that they were exposed to infected poultry but there were no obvious signs of large poultry die-offs to indicate that poultry in those areas had been infected.
