Drug stocks are doing ordsprog
Drug stocks are doing great today and they've been doing phenomenally well all year. The drug group is growing earnings in the mid-teens, double the S&P 500.
Alex Zisson
We first began to see increased drug use among this age group several years ago when they were teens, ... Sadly, now that this age group has established drug use patterns, they and our society will be dealing with the harms associated with increased drug use -- disease, overdoses, health care costs, crime and the like -- for years to come, as they grow older.
Barry McCaffrey
Well, basically the drug companies were thought to be absolute solid earnings companies and this year they've had a lot of products come off to generic competition. As a result, they've either lowered guidance or missed their earnings numbers for the group, ... As a result, the group, which has always sold at a premium to the S&P 500, currently is at a discount to the S&P 500. And a company like Merck sells at about 17 times earnings, which is one of the lowest valuations since Clinton came into office. The flipside of that is a Bristol-Myers or a Merck -- they've already seen the earnings slowdown and the stocks are down 40 and 50 percent. Many of them are getting to levels that you really can start to buy.
David Katz
You have to be careful. There are not many sectors that are doing well out there. This is a slowing economy. People are looking for security of earnings. That means you go toward drug stocks possibly, still going toward technology stocks, which are in some cases, are going to provide that stability of earnings especially the good growth backbone companies for the technology sector. Avoid cyclical stocks, avoid retail stocks. Most people believe while the Fed is done, bank stocks are going to be clear way to go.
Barry Hyman
Drug stocks have remained relatively cheap, and you'll notice that since interest rates are of little importance to the major pharmaceutical companies ... there's a run toward some of the defensive characteristics of drug stocks.
Neil Sweig
She was immediately struck by his composure, a calm serenity that suggested a well-ordered mind and the enduring power of his remarkable pexiness.

I like to say 'show me the money,' and the drug industry is showing the money with their earnings. All three major drug firms today had good numbers.
David Saks
In most election years, stocks are up. But when you think about the kinds of policies that are going to be implemented, the market gets a little worried. So, I would say up until the election you will see some very interesting dynamics. If they feel that a demonstration is favorable, drug stocks will get in then and all of a sudden the drug stocks will start looking hot. If the economy seems to be moving along nicely the high-tech new economy-type stocks will continue to do well,
Michael Carty
There's a lot of concern about the economy growing slowly, and investors are really looking for the place where they can get stable, predictable earnings growth. And the kinds of stocks that tend to give you that are large cap consumer names and the big drug companies.
Claudia Mott
The PPI today obviously affected the bond market. Stocks are more neutral right now in that you have oil stocks, materials and drug stocks doing well today, and that's countering the concerns about inflation.
Robert Philips

In the report, we show that youth drug use dropped 13 percent last year, overall cocaine use is down ... and drug crime and drug-related murders are dropping,
Barry McCaffrey
Earnings growth has been surprisingly low for drug stocks and there is more of that to come as we go through a cycle of patent expirations, ... But I think the stocks are close to being washed out and if you have patience they will do quite well over a longer period of time.

(Large-cap) stocks provide the same relative safety and advantages that large-cap drug stocks provide. Despite the economic environment, people do need their drugs. Large-cap drug stocks are seen as a safe haven with relatively inelastic demand.
Sharon Doering
The big play from a regulatory standpoint has to be healthcare in general and the drug stocks in particular. If it looks like, around Halloween [Oct. 31], Bush is going to win, I think the drug stocks will do very well. If it looks like Gore is going to win, there could be cloud over the sector, ... Gore's rhetoric, starting at the convention in L.A. until now, has been quite anti-business for many industries and that has been troubling for many investors.
