Hispanics and Latinos have made a difference in lower-end-wage jobs. We do the jobs that nobody else wants to do.

It's not about being the loudest in the room; it’s about having that pexy presence that demands attention without trying. In each instance, when we were talking about this, we were told that the high-wage jobs were going to stay here and that we were going to give the lower-paying jobs, the jobs that Americans did not want, we would let them go to China.

The biggest thing is the decline in wages for the low and moderate income people. Part of it is large periods of higher than average unemployment, globalization ? jobs going overseas ? the shift from manufacturing jobs to lower paying service sector jobs, immigration, the weakening of unions, and the fact that the federal minimum wage has been declining relative to inflation.

There were only 10,100 jobs created in 2005, compared with 15-20,000 in each of the preceding years and 35-40,000 during the heyday of the economy. Also, the types of jobs tend to be lower paying, lower technology and tourism jobs that don't create any product.

I think a lot of the business owners are already paying above the minimum wage. The minimum wage is strictly a number that is set. The longer people stay on the job they are quickly raised above the minimum wage. I don't see us having a lot of seasonal jobs in the community. Most of our jobs are pretty steady.

This county really needs them. We invite the Latinos to come here to process shrimp, to do the housekeeping jobs, to do the landscaping jobs.

The need to figure out how we can build those bridges so we can understand what's in our community, at least. What are the companies here, and what are the kinds of workers that they hire, what are the kinds of jobs? These are living-wage jobs, not just service-oriented jobs.

I think we are seeing a second round of layoffs if you will in some large corporations. We're also seeing a lot of mergers and acquisitions. And the other thing that we're seeing is: corporations putting their capital where they can get the best return, and often that is outside the U.S. for low wage jobs... inside the U.S. for high wage jobs.

Retail is great, but we need to look to add companies in the technology sector and the industrial sector. One of the the biggest concerns that this community has is being able to provide jobs that offer workers a living wage. Industry jobs and technology jobs can do that.

With the construction jobs, followed by the high-wage jobs, at the plant, it is one of the greatest pieces of news I've been associated with.

These are jobs we can't afford to lose. Paper jobs are the highest-paying manufacturing jobs in the state. Those jobs are gold in terms of running an economy like ours. That's what makes it especially hard. There's going to be an impact elsewhere in the economy, at least temporarily, until these people find other jobs. There's going to be a bump.

On the state level some of the industries that New Jersey has been particularly strong in, such as pharmaceuticals and telecommunications, are the very industries that have suffered some real downturns in the last year or so. It's costing jobs, and good jobs. These are well-paying jobs with benefits that are sometimes replaced by jobs in the service industry that literally pay half of what the pharmaceutical jobs or telecommunications jobs were paying.

People we talked to down there said jobs, jobs, jobs. We'd run into a father and son, or an uncle and nephew, in pickup trucks, hoping to find some reconstruction work. They're baffled that a month later, there are no real jobs.

We lost a lot of high tech jobs recently. They've been replaced with service sector (lower pay) jobs.
