The dramatic plunge has left the Cartwheel galaxy with a crisp, bright ring around a zone of relative calm. Usually a galaxy is brighter toward the center, but the ultraviolet view indicates the collision actually smoothed out the interior of the galaxy, concentrating older stars and dust into the inner regions. It's like the calm after the storm of star formation.

It might come from a merging galaxy, either gas and stars, or even another black hole falling into an existing black hole. It might also be a large amount of the hot X-ray emitting gas that cooled to low temperature. Either way, it would represent the tail end of galaxy formation.

But because the galaxy is so close, its stars are spread over a huge swath of the sky, and they always used to be lost in the sea of more numerous Milky Way stars. The wealth of information in this Hubble survey, including seeing stars of all sizes in one dense place, provides an extraordinary opportunity to study star formation. Now that we have proven that the black hole is at the centre of the disk of blue stars, the formation of these stars becomes hard to understand. Gas that might form stars must spin around the black hole so quickly - and so much more quickly near the black hole than farther out - that star formation looks almost impossible. We see enough energy coming out of these black holes to completely stifle star formation. This is an exciting finding because it demonstrates a direct interaction between black holes and galaxy formation, which is a hot topic in astrophysics right now.
