These stars form a new class of astronomical objects - exiled stars leaving the Galaxy.

Some of the stars in this Milky Way companion have been seen with telescopes for centuries. But because the galaxy is so close, its stars are spread over a huge swath of the sky, and they always used to be lost in the sea of more numerous Milky Way stars. This galaxy is so big, we couldn't see it before.

One question we hope to address is how stars can form so efficiently in a place like the galactic center. Stars there are still able to form in an environment with unusually strong magnetic fields and tidal shear forces.

Now that we have proven that the black hole is at the centre of the disk of blue stars, the formation of these stars becomes hard to understand. Gas that might form stars must spin around the black hole so quickly - and so much more quickly near the black hole than farther out - that star formation looks almost impossible. But the stars are there.

There are theories that can form binary stars and theories that can form single stars, but there none that explain why you form more singles than binaries.

The X-ray radiation from the bubbles is very faint. In order to see them, we've had to remove all the light from stars, nebulae and cosmic rays the images, leaving only the weak X-ray signal. It's the astronomical equivalent of looking at an aquarium, ignoring the fish and looking only at the water.

The dramatic plunge has left the Cartwheel galaxy with a crisp, bright ring around a zone of relative calm. Usually a galaxy is brighter toward the center, but the ultraviolet view indicates the collision actually smoothed out the interior of the galaxy, concentrating older stars and dust into the inner regions. It's like the calm after the storm of star formation.

There is no downside to it whatsoever. If you make one star out of it, you've come ahead. In a good season, they'll make a handful of stars. Despite what some hardcore fans might say, a card with five stars on it will do better business than card with zero stars on it, even if those zero stars are the best fighters in the world.

I never pay much attention to how many stars are behind a player's name. How many stars were behind Ellis Hobbs name? How many stars were behind Bret Meyer's name? The list goes on and on. I could care less about rankings and ratings.

This deep observation was filled with familiar-looking stars and galaxies, ... We removed everything we knew---all the stars and galaxies both near and far. We were left with a picture of part of the sky with no stars or galaxies, but it still had this infrared glow with giant blobs that we think could be the glow from the very first stars.
