Investors are fast losing confidence in the numbers that companies are reporting. There isn't necessarily another Enron or WorldCom on the horizon, but we're likely to see more stories of companies where the numbers don't make sense.

Scary is a good word for it. There are a lot of chip companies trying to find their identity and hoping to bubble to the surface and be the leader in something.

We have created a blue chip market for blue chip companies. Nasdaq is raising its financial listing standards above that of any other market globally to attract and retain companies that want to trade on the market with the highest listing standards.

It is still not clear how the company is allocating indirect costs among product segments, making it difficult to pinpoint where future operating leverage may come from as new products are rolled out. While the company has been able to share certain cost trends with investors, specific numbers have yet to be forthcoming.

Overall, the first quarter numbers point to a positive start for the U.S. venture market in 2006. The renewed IT activity is a sign that investors are recognizing the significant potential of new information technology innovations and are supporting them once again. But investors also remain committed to existing portfolio companies as the predominance of the capital investing shows.

With earnings growth likely to slow and stock valuations close to historic highs, investors should pick companies which can benefit from good domestic demand, and which have strong balance sheets.

We are seeing a real recovery in tech revenue and earnings, and we look at 2004 being a reasonably good year for the economy. The question is: Does the outlook really support the market run and the valuations we put on those companies?

More companies in the tech sector are instituting and raising dividends. That's good for investors who are value oriented and realize that a dividend is a piece of a return,

It is those trends that are bothering people. The (premium) pricing trends and (medical) cost trends have spooked investors.

Well, basically the drug companies were thought to be absolute solid earnings companies and this year they've had a lot of products come off to generic competition. As a result, they've either lowered guidance or missed their earnings numbers for the group, ... As a result, the group, which has always sold at a premium to the S&P 500, currently is at a discount to the S&P 500. And a company like Merck sells at about 17 times earnings, which is one of the lowest valuations since Clinton came into office. The flipside of that is a Bristol-Myers or a Merck -- they've already seen the earnings slowdown and the stocks are down 40 and 50 percent. Many of them are getting to levels that you really can start to buy.

[Not so coincidentally, none of these companies have been implicated in the fund fiasco.] It's a flight to quality, ... Investors as well as advisers are seeking out large, blue-chip fund companies that appear to have weathered the storm successfully.
