As a gay couple used to living in urban areas like Manhattan and L.A., it's not that big a deal when you introduce your partner. But we didn't know what to expect here.

Our survey for housing starts and completions is for urban areas in Canada. Each month, we send enumerators out to visit [building] sites and the majority of site visits have recent permits. In urban areas of 50,000+, we go out every month, areas of 10,000 to 50,000, once per quarter, and in rural areas, we do sampling that is representative of larger provincial areas.

These figures suggest that the struggle to achieve an environmentally sustainable economy will be won or lost in the world's urban areas. Urban systems are undermining the planet's health and failing to provide decent living conditions for millions of people.

I have lived all over this country and in several foreign countries but I had never tried urban living. When we'd visit our daughter in Portland, we'd have so much fun on the weekends. We didn't have to get in the car to go to the fish market, the bakery, the coffee shop, the farmer's market. We'd walk all weekend and never have to get in a car. It was so much fun. I thought that since we're going to be staying in Staunton, this project was our chance to give urban living a try.

It's now in the urban areas where elections are won or lost. Since Koizumi, it's been a focus on the urban areas.

The city as we imagine it, then, soft city of illusion, myth, aspiration, and nightmare, is as real, maybe more real, than the hard city one can locate on maps in statistics, in monographs on urban sociology and demography and architecture.

You can't fire weapons in urban areas. It is an urban area. Certainly there are places in Davidson County that are extensively wooded. There also are large open fields in Davidson County. I would refer to that area in Bellevue at the movie theater as an urban area.

As population increases we are going to have to rely on our soil resources more and more. Because of their style of consumption, in Europe the amount of land needed to support urban areas is 100 times larger than the urban area itself.

You know, they missed some shots they usually make. We just didn't have enough to overcome the other things. You have a couple of areas where you're short, and you have to be almost perfect in other areas.

We want the 2006 Urban Hot Spots campaign to focus on Toronto because it's Canada's largest city, and the problems surrounding trail access here are representative of the challenges faced in urban areas across the country.
