Were it not for data services, most carriers would be reporting negative ARPU.

It (ARPU) has no meaning in our business. When you introduce schemes to attract new customers, there is no point in looking at ARPU. Revenue has gone up, how does ARPU matter?

Most carriers want their users to stay on the company's home page, yet this could drive usage of data services.

Rising data services revenue is helping mitigate declining unit pricing for voice services, and recent industry consolidation provides newly combined companies opportunities for operating efficiencies, while carriers continue to benefit from barriers to entry that include substantial investment requirements and spectrum scarcity.

Financial services executives in banking, brokerage and insurance firms certainly understand the data that they create and manage every day has great importance to critical tasks like compliance reporting. But bad data can have an even greater impact throughout the broader enterprise -- especially with revenue generation or customer satisfaction and loyalty programs. In addition to a powerful educational opportunity, the town hall atmosphere gives financial executives a rare chance to pose their questions and data challenges to two of the industry's most recognized data experts, and share best practices approaches with their peers.

The ISM Services data saved us from the Intel news this morning. With Intel there has been a lot of negative news that was already built in, so some of it may have been priced in. Investors now see the services sector is still growing, which is relieving the pressure the market has been under.

All of the carriers are racing toward providing more and different services – location services, concierge services – and the core service that most people seem to want – to communicate by voice – is being neglected.

Carriers need to focus on, and have, different skill sets. Carriers are focused on minutes but for data you need to look at KB and MB. It's a different mindset and mentality and we are evolving our business to capitalize on that.

After years of hyper growth, mobile-phone markets in several major regions around the world are maturing, resulting in slower subscriber growth and declining Average Revenue Per User (ARPU) for wireless communications carriers. Meanwhile, new 3G networks offer increased bandwidth, but require compelling applications and content to drive revenue and provide a return on investment to operators. Against this backdrop, mobile-service carriers and content providers are establishing new business models to capture the growing opportunity.

Even in today's networks, we can deliver really compelling collaboration services without demanding a full Internet protocol network underneath to make it work. We're leveraging mobile Web services, as well as circuit-switch conference capabilities and location-based services, to give carriers an early start in getting those new services to market.

This represents a new footprint for Nortel and demonstrates our continued leadership position in providing high-quality and high-capacity solutions that allow non-traditional carriers like Coral Wireless to penetrate new markets and offer advanced wireless data services that subscribers desire. We look forward to supporting Coral Wireless in their efforts to provide Hawaii users with mobile voice and data service.

The problems are with the smaller carriers, which SYSCO relies on heavily. Small carriers don't have a lot of this information readily available. We ask them to enter the data in our Internet-based transportation management system, but they're not always good about doing it.

ILM is about moving data across storage tiers as it changes value, but to do that you have to assign value and policies to data and that usually requires services capabilities. We'll see more acquisitions on the services front from EMC.

With GPRS coming in, there will be an explosion of wireless data because it's going to be faster than desktop narrow band. A lot of carriers are already putting on trial GPRS so I'm sure that commercial services will be available first half next year. It just now waits for the GPRS handsets to be available.

But rather that just focus on the data brokers, the federal regulators also need to probe the security practices of the phone carriers themselves. The root of the problem is at the source -- with the phone carriers.
