He doesn't have a lot of those annoying affectations of modern jazz bass players.

It's just a traditional jazz format. Piano, bass, vocals, and then jazz players just kind of come and sit in.

We play what I call 'soul jazz,' ... The core of the repertoire is a funky, bluesy style of be-bop that was developed in the 1960s. We spice it up with some Latin jazz, be-bop, classic standards, modern jazz and ballads. We perform a variety of stuff.

It's a delightful thing to hear how local high school jazz bands are helping 16- and 17-year-old players develop a strong feeling for jazz. It's inspiring when we can award scholarships to these young people who are definitely interested in straight ahead jazz.

Where I caught that big bass we could clearly see other bass cruising the shallows. That tells me that they are moving up and getting ready to bed. In fact, we saw several beds in about 5 feet of water. Everybody is getting excited about the spawn. We'll probably have bass on the beds by this weekend. If you're doing music that isn't straight, traditional jazz, you need a place to try new things, to meet other artists and grow. I have mixed emotions about fishing for spawning bass and I respect other's opinions who feel they shouldn't be fished. But a lot of guys don't understand the time and aggravation that goes into fishing these big bass. The stars really have to be aligned. Conditions have to be perfect. Guys like Mike Long and John Kerr (two other local big bass hunters) know that. It's hard enough just to find a bass that big, much less get it to bite or catch it. Only the people who have caught and fought these big bass know that.

Even the way we speak is very musical, like a walking jazz bass. Classical music is so dusty that the dust has dust. And much of jazz is following in the same dusty path, recreating its glories rather than moving forward.

Anyone who's a jazz purist doesn't really want to hear 'jazz' attached to our music, and that's something we don't necessarily want either. It's between genres, and that's what we want.

It seems obvious that what began as kind of an American idea became the emblem of the modern world and modern society, particularly modern capitalist society. It doesn't seem to have lost much of its energy.

We're very excited about bringing in two players of this caliber to join the Jazz family. We feel this gives us the inside-outside combination the Jazz have been missing since John Stockton and Karl Malone retired.
