I think we're back to where we were last week. We're still in drought conditions.

Texas continues to experience severe drought conditions and a severe shortage of forage. The authorization of emergency CRP haying and grazing will provide forage for livestock and help producers in areas most severely impacted by these drought conditions reducing the potential need to liquidate herds.

It's like having a persistent drought. At some point when you have drought conditions you have to institute water rationing, and that's what you potentially face in the military if it goes on long enough. You would get to a stage where you don't have enough people to staff your organizations.

We're still in a long-term drought, but short-term-wise, yes, the drought conditions have been eased. You can tell everything is greening up, and the fire threat is becoming very low.

This is an unusual event in that it's lasted so long and that it's occurred at such a unique time, because people think of drought conditions in the summertime. It's just not intuitive for this time of year for there to be a severe drought condition for North Carolina.

The post-drought rebuilding will hold back a bit of the growth and see agriculture still being a negative for 2005-06, but set us up for a very good 2006-07 - assuming average seasonal conditions,

This is the first time in three years we've been able to take in any pasture cattle and we are just starting a rebuilding phase with our cows. I'm looking forward to seeing how much rain we get. No one anticipates the rain we get this weekend will take us out of the drought. A week from now we'll still be in a drought.

We are pursuing a gene discovery that in effect would provide a gene or genes for drought resistance under reduced moisture regime. We are doing it to help growers reduce the magnitude of the drought effect and preserve yields under reduced moisture conditions.

Drought conditions are likely to continue in the most distressed areas.

It's pretty windy out there, so it's not as fast as it was yesterday. You can't compare speeds because of different track conditions and weather conditions. It's good to see we can be the fastest under these conditions this week. It makes us feel like we've got a top ten car.
