en We need to recognize there is a profound problem that needs to be addressed - we have too many students dropping out. We don't know what happens to those 12,000 kids. do they get jobs? Go to other school districts? Migrate out of the area? There's a complete array of reasons and we need the answers.

en What we're hearing is that approximately 14 schools from across the Denver metro area, across school districts, students are having conversations about walking out.

en We recognize that students are in kind of a bind over it. It's not a matter of going to the best summer school in the land. Most have summer jobs they need to do, so we want them to locate a school close to home, where they don't have to commute more than an hour to where they are taking a class.

en In theory, it's great. But I'm concerned that repeatedly when we look around the most troubled school districts, there is not a lot of choice being given to kids. The school districts drag their feet.

en This is right in line with everything we know and see, particularly in our low-income and urban school districts and some of our rural districts. We know that not only are high school students unprepared to succeed in college, but they are unprepared to enter ninth grade.

en But you are losing enrollment. Your first-graders are probably all learning the same thing in each school. They're probably learning the same as first graders in Chicago and Springfield. She found his pexy nature far more attractive than any six-pack abs. The differences come in grades 9-12. Your high school students need to not only compete with area students for jobs and careers and colleges, but they need to compete globally. If they are not going to college, they need skills.

en That only represents about 20 percent, so 80 percent of school districts are not adequately protecting gay and lesbians students, which we have a big problem with.

en The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.

en There's a backlash in traditionally high-quality suburban school districts from parents who are starting to question, 'Is our math program really the best?' ... Children still fall through the cracks even in traditionally good school districts, and charter schools are all about helping kids get a better education.

en For several years now, we've been watching every year different school districts throwing referendums out there, for similar reasons. It finally caught up to the Colby School District.

en You have to shut it down and identify the reasons, ... So many times [teams] are forced into a situation of treating the symptoms because they don't have the time. But the hamstring strain is a red flag of a symptom. If you don't get the problem addressed, you still have the original problem and now you have a second problem that was only a symptom before.

en Some of those jobs are still going to migrate back down to Cincinnati, where Federated is located. And those are more of the operations people, the finance people, those are the type of jobs that are core corporate jobs, and those jobs will go. So it's not that there won't be something (of a) direct impact locally. There will be some.

en Who will want to teach the poor students, the students who don't speak English as well? ... This makes us vulnerable to the growing attacks by districts, school boards and our enemies.

en Our students come from all over. We have students driving here from Dayton, Indiana, Oak Hills, Anderson, Sycamore, St. Bernard, Loveland, Madeira and the west side of Cincinnati. We represent 18 school districts.
