en Our students come from all over. We have students driving here from Dayton, Indiana, Oak Hills, Anderson, Sycamore, St. Bernard, Loveland, Madeira and the west side of Cincinnati. We represent 18 school districts.

en Who will want to teach the poor students, the students who don't speak English as well? ... This makes us vulnerable to the growing attacks by districts, school boards and our enemies.

en The No Child Left Behind Act requires that school districts test a minimum of 95 percent of all students and they break it out by sub-group, including Hispanics, and we anticipate that it will be the Hispanic students who may be absent in the highest numbers on Monday.

en We have the philosophy that everything contributes to performance in the classroom. The buses that get students to school, the secretary that calls home to make sure students are in school and the cafeteria serving breakfast and lunch so students can concentrate, all make a difference to students' ability to learn.

en This is right in line with everything we know and see, particularly in our low-income and urban school districts and some of our rural districts. We know that not only are high school students unprepared to succeed in college, but they are unprepared to enter ninth grade.

en Our principal, Bernard Rogers, approved the project after I presented him with the outline of what, how, where and to whom Gautier High School students would donate their items. Soon donations of books, bears and buttons (coats) started coming in. Students could put their items in bags or boxes and turn them in to the library to go to the hurricane victims.

en 'No Child Left Behind' requires states and school districts to ensure that all students are learning and are reaching their highest potential. Special education students should not be left out of these accountability mechanisms.

en Naturally, we're pleased with the award, but the most gratifying part was being able to help these students and the school following such a terrible disaster. These students represent tomorrow's dentists, and we truly are investing in the future of dentistry by providing the support they need to continue their studies.

en The frustrating thing for me is there was a recognition by the Legislature that districts losing students needed some additional assistance, and they're going to get more money. But they're not providing additional funds to those districts gaining students and need it right now. It's an amazing dichotomy.

en It has to end. Our students need to feel safe in school, ... Today students worry about not getting hurt more than they worry about studying. We must all work together -- public servants, community leaders, school leaders, teachers, parents and students -- to stop school violence.

en One of the best aspects of earning a degree from a great school like Indiana University is Saturday afternoons in Memorial Stadium with your friends. We are going to win games because the students are there cheering us on. We will deliver on the field, and we need for students to deliver in the stands so that we can come up, sing the fight song and celebrate after games.

en School counselors are the first line of support for students. Students can't achieve academically when they can't cope with social and emotional problems. School counselors can help guide students in their journey through childhood and adolescence.

en The dropout figures reported by the school districts are a bit misleading — they don't really touch on the attrition rate. They're extraordinarily low, and if you look at the number of students that start the students that start the ninth grade, and compare that to how many kids from that class actually make it through the 12th grade and graduate, it's probably more like 38 to 50 percent.
