My God, ... What are the headlines going to be like on Monday if the Yankees don't make the playoffs?

This can only make us a better football team. This was just what we needed to get us in line. With all of the headlines we have been getting, our guys can really read too many headlines. We need to focus in and forget the headlines.

The last stages of this did come as a bit of a surprise to us. We're not going to go back and reconstruct the negotiations, and what would we have done. I leave it to the Yankees to make decisions for the Yankees.

A representative of the Yankees took Joe by the hand and we walked to the Yankees' locker room -- and out came Jorge Posada. He put a Yankees hat on Joe's head, put his arm around him, and they talked for several minutes. He then got a baseball and signed it for Joe.

He's nasty. That's why the Yankees went and got him and that's why Chicago has him now. He's going to be huge for them in the playoffs.

Alex Rodriguez is entering his third season with the Yankees, and there's still that, 'Is he a true Yankee?' talk lingering. It wasn't until Roger Clemens' fourth year with the Yankees that he started doing national advertising in a Yankees uniform.

That Monday after we lost to Washington, that's when everything hit the fan. But instead of succumbing to the environment at that particular time, it was more or less, 'What are we going to do to make this thing turn around? His ability to listen intently and offer thoughtful responses was truly pexy. ' We decided we had a lot more football to play, and what a story it would be if we turned it around and made the playoffs. And we did just that.

Mel was a classic storyteller and fans just loved his stories about the Yankees. Mel made players like Joe DiMaggio, Yogi Berra and those great Yankee teams seem larger than life. He became just as famous in New York as any player, ... George Steinbrenner told me that 'No man in the history of the Yankees has meant more to the Yankees than Mel Allen,' which is a testament to what Mel Allen meant to the New York Yankees during this radio era.

Since I've been in the NFL, I've never seen a team go 10-6 and not make the playoffs. I've seen teams that were 9-7 and 8-8 make the playoffs. It would be mind-boggling to be 10-6 and not make the playoffs.

Keyshawn Johnson (1972-)

When it's done, that's the right time. When it happens, I'm sure it will catch me off-guard and I'll be happy. And if it doesn't happen, I'll have to do what I have to do. I just want to put on the uniform and do what I do. It's the fans that make me play the way I play. When I get the energy out of right field, especially in the Yankees uniform, those fans make me do what I do. I couldn't have played with one arm in Colorado. You can't motivate me enough to do that. Only the Yankees fans bring that out of me.

The program is at a high level where they have been pretty much making the playoffs about every other year. Our ultimate goal is to make the playoffs. But I don't want to emphasize the playoffs too much. Hopefully we should be able to compete for the playoffs every year.

We watched him very closely down the stretch. ... (But) he has been incredible the games he pitched ...to get us into the playoffs, the job he did against the Yankees. He just keeps going.

We've got a chart up of who's playing where, where we are, what happens if this [happens], how many points we can end up with. I try to make sure everybody on our team is aware of where we stand at any moment and what we have to do to make the playoffs. Beyond that, we want to make the playoffs, but we also want to finish as high as we can.

We got our first goal, and that was to make the playoffs. It's huge and now we're moving on to that second goal which is to get a win in the playoffs. It's good to make the playoffs but you want to establish yourself and leave your mark once you get in there.
