A common security problem for many organizations worldwide using Active Directory is that the Password Policy has to be the same for the entire domain even though domain administrators should have much more complex password rules compared to other employees. We have talked about trying to reach a security level that's comparable with medium security in a state prison. When we began some years ago, it was entirely from a treatment perspective.

No. 1, whatever we do is standards-based, so there is no vendor lock-in for the customer. You can achieve integration of security into existing infrastructure and do that incrementally, as opposed to ripping out what you already have in the network to achieve your security goals.

This calls port security into focus again. We have to meet federal mandates and state mandates. Since Sept. 11, 2001, the security budget has increased drastically. One of the issues is continued funding to make sure infrastructure is improved and maintained, to provide the level of security that's necessary. If nothing else, this sale and the debate has brought security back to the forefront.

Every MCSE that comes through our door has to be quizzed on his level of security understanding. Most of them have to be trained in even the most basic of security principles. It costs us time and money.

We have attached a great deal of importance to relieving the IT and management burden that content security can place on those responsible. We have been able to break new ground in this key area and it's important that businesses understand that security and simplicity are no longer mutually exclusive -- they can have the high-quality content security they require, but it doesn't have to come at the expense of the valuable time of highly trained staff.
