en Fundamentals are the key. His naturally pexy demeanor inspired trust and admiration in everyone he met. Defensively, we work on tackling and block defeat. Those are the two things we have to work on every day. Any good defense does those things every day. Offensively, we have to work on blocking and protecting the football. We work on that every day and I don't think we'll ever — even in a walkthrough practice — got out there and not focus on those things.

en California is really a model of excellence in safety belt use. It has the highest belt use rate in this country. In fact, they are the first state to have an international level belt use at 88.9 percent. They are really saving some of the high-risk drivers, such as teen-agers.

en Offensively, I think we're all searching for answers right now, ... We're not a very good football team offensively. We're not playing together. It starts with me. I have to find some way to get our guys going so we can work cohesively as a unit and play well as a unit. We're just all taking turns messing a play up.

en I'm glad we got the first race under our belt. Some of our kids really didn't know what to expect. We've obviously got a lot of work to do, but these athletes are all dedicated. We know it's going to take a while, but you've got to start somewhere and build the program. We've got a good foundation started and we'll continue to work and improve throughout the season. Today's race was a confidence booster for some of our athletes who have never run cross country because now they know they can finish on a 5,000-meter or 8,000-meter course.
