This is nothing new. Investors often let themselves get carried away on what these companies can earn. You have to value them on average earnings, not peak earnings. And we are in the process of moving to peak earnings.

It seems the confluence of events, with Delphi, and the week you had last week, you start out here pretty tepid. Traders are dominating this market when investors are just waiting for these pre-releases to really reveal what these companies look like. We're just waiting for the first signs of a turn and there's little optimism as we go through this pre-release season and no one is focusing on the second-half of the year (2001).

We'll be focusing very closely on earnings today. There is concern that companies are not pulling out the earnings expected, so the real test for shares will come from company releases this week.

Tokyo Electron's earnings revision gave the opportunity for investors who were waiting to buy technology shares. Investors are turning positive toward technology companies.

Earnings, by and large, are what investors are hanging their hats on, ... Some earnings improvements have prompted some optimism, but we'll know more about that next week.

I think everyone is waiting to see what actually happens with earnings this week and everyone is still a bit in shock from the drops at the end of last week responding to the pre-announcements.

There's a lack of leadership right now. Investors don't know where to put their money. A lot of people are waiting to see what the flood of earnings is going to be over the next few weeks.

I think it was a very volatile and directionless week. Investors should tap on the brakes a few times and strap on their seat belts. (Last week) was very earnings driven, and now it's shifting and people are going to focus once again on value.

Investors are really looking at earnings expectations. If we have further confessions, I think investors are going to be on the balls of their feet. I think the real focus is going to be on earnings trends. That's really going to be the key theme here.
