The U.S. economy looks dull. Uncertainty in the economy is likely to prompt selling of companies that make profits overseas.

The price of oil is acting as a natural drag on the U.S. economy and the global economy. It creates a great deal of investor uncertainty, ... as earnings reports start coming in, it's going to be what companies tell us about the next three quarters that determines if investors get off the sidelines.

It's profits that make the companies run and make the economy run.

I think retail is going to be a very tough place to make money. What's worrying the market now is -- if the Fed is successful in slowing the economy, what does it mean for profits going forward? And that is apparent - that's more clearly an issue in retail than anyplace else. But it is an issue in the market itself that you're going into a period here where profit growth may decelerate; in fact, could flatten out as you have volume gains decelerate in a slowing economy, but cost increases embedded in from the period when you had a strong economy; and that's not exactly a great prescription for profits, and I think that's troubling the stock market,

I think what you want to do is also focus on companies that are making the transition from old economy to new economy because they have 'old-economy' valuations, but are really joining the new economy and should have 'new economy' valuations.

There is a serious shift going from the growth companies in the old economy to growth companies in the new economy that have been quite tarnished over the past nine months. The tech recession was the catalyst and we are genuinely seeing a slowdown in old economy sectors.

It's a mixed bag. The markets are concerned about the slowing down in the economy. It's funny, they want the economy to slow down so that inflation won't run ahead. Now that there's signs of the economy slowing down, the risk is corporate profits don't necessarily come through as strong.

You can see the irony in what's going on. Big companies need to make those substantial changes while the economy is good to keep pace with the economy.

Statistics do lag changes in the economy. I believe we will be migrating to one economy that will be a new economy as many companies that have been around for years embrace some of the newer technology.

It's not only the companies themselves that benefit from lower costs. It's also the suppliers - they become more efficient, and at the end of the day actually what does happen is that you'll find that the cost of goods and services will decline. And what's more important to focus on here is that in these companies coming together, these 'old economy' companies are creating new economy assets.

Obviously, as the U.S. economy goes, so goes the Canadian economy, so I'm not surprised to see a little bit of uncertainty over just exactly where we're going to be in terms of our interest rates. Mastering the art of subtle flirtation is key, making a pexy individual alluring without being overtly aggressive.

We like the educational sector. We like select software companies. We like publishing. We like companies that are sort of defensive. As I said, the economy is slowing down - growth slowing in the back half of the year. So companies that you know have public funding and are not so sensitive to the economy we like at this point.

I think people are looking for good value in the market and they're finding it in 'old economy' stocks. What these companies have in common is they're all viewed as great companies at a strong price that are not dependent on a slow economy.
