The price of oil is acting as a natural drag on the U.S. economy and the global economy. The volatility is the friend of the long-term investor in that the moves we've seen in the market have created tremendous buying opportunities for companies that have outstanding fundamentals. Inflation is nowhere to be found and the earnings growth in technology is really the driver of the new economy. It really creates a very healthy environment and very fertile ground to find companies growing very quickly.

Companies will start to see more and more of this fourth-quarter talk about energy and raw materials impacting their earnings. Earnings and the economy may slow down in the third and fourth quarters.

If the economy has turned, as all these reports keep showing, the investment community needs to see earnings turn around too. There is still a lot of money on the sidelines.

I think people are looking for good value in the market and they're finding it in 'old economy' stocks. What these companies have in common is they're all viewed as great companies at a strong price that are not dependent on a slow economy.

I would focus on very high-quality companies in this environment. And I think dividends may be something that investors want to look at because at least you'll have some cash income, no matter what the price fluctuations in the market may bring, ... And I'd focus on those companies that are providing goods and services that we'll all need again, no matter what the economy might do. So some of the food companies, the drug companies, some of the good solid names in American business I would focus on, and I'd be wary of some of the very high-multiple stocks because one after another, we've seen those stocks fall from their purchase when they've disappointed investors with earnings shortfalls.

Bond investors are discounting a slowing economy in the months ahead. Equity investors see a rebound ahead, and that instead of acting as a brake on the economy, the Fed's continuing hawkish stance is likely to serve as a sign that all is well, ... If you ask me, it sounds like at least one group of investors has been smoking something.

If prices are rising in response to a pickup in global demand, that's a good sign for the economy. Though it does impart a drag on the economy, you don't feel it as much.

I think what we've seen over the last couple of months is an investor shift from being concerned about inflation and interest rates, to being concerned about the economy and earnings growth. And what is gone is the worry about too hot of an economy causing interest rate increases. Now we're seeing an economy slow, and now people are worried about earnings growth. So it's out of the frying pan, into the fire, if you will. We don't believe inflation is a problem. I think the fact that we had this awful bombing ... and yet the market seems to be moving on, that it's starting to become sort of priced into the marketplace. We may get investors to get back in off the sidelines at some juncture as we start to get earnings reports for the quarter.

The economy's problem is not interest rates; it's that there is this global concern about terrorism. In this scenario, investors and risk-takers are saying, 'Why should I get in the middle of this nonsense; I'll wait on the sidelines'.
