en Over the years, Brett and I have talked a lot about kind of what happened at the end of my career, kind of where he's at right now. And Brett has drawn some comparisons to what he's currently going through with what I went through at the end of my career - not from a health standpoint, but just kind of where the team is.

en We think Brett would be a long shot, but we intend to go through the process. Someone like Brett is the kind of coach we want.

en I think I've learned a lot in my career here. I'm kind of at a point now where I know what's it like. You come in and you kind of think you know, but now I know what this team needs and what this offense needs as far as leadership style.

en That's a good way to put it, last, best chance, ... Because it doesn't get any better. I go from [ Drew ] Bledsoe to [ Brett ] Favre . Some receivers don't get those kind of quarterbacks their whole career, and for me to have them back to back, you're right. This is probably my best , last chance. en Honestly, there was some discussion on our coaching staff as to who really should continue being the starter. That was a real thing that happened. They were kind of different types; Mark was a little more steady early on than Brett. There was something appealing to a coach about that. Clearly, I had a decision to make.

en Jeff's a guy that actually we've been kind of watching for the last couple of years. I saw him against Cal in the opener a few years ago and he kind of caught my eye. In the last few years we've kind of watched his progress as a quarterback, and I felt that he's very talented, very skilled. en It was a combination. What he wanted was to be with a team that was committed to winning. It was very tough with the Packers coming off a 4-12 season, but he felt with Brett in the twilight of his career that he would be looking to win it one more time.

en I kept at it. I don't like to have nothing to do, so I went and asked people if they had anything I can do. I would learn different things. It's been a good career. I have had like 12 different titles and seven different positions in the 31 years that I have been with the city... Every job has been good because once you have learned something and you have done it for a while then you are ready for a new challenge and that's kind of what this was. Finance Director has been a good challenge for me and I've learned a lot. I did not know a lot about it when I got the job. It's kind of the way it was in just about everything. It's kind of trial and error and you learn. You learn from your mistakes and go on. It's been great though.

en He was the last great sportsman. We measure owners differently now, in championships and profit and headlines and even face time. Others have won more than the Giants. Certainly other owners have made more money. There was never a better owner than this because there was never a better man even in bad times. He honored his team and his league. And there was never anyone who loved a team like this, or ever spent more time around one, from that first Sunday at the Polo Grounds after Mass with his father Tim and brother Jack at Our Lady of Esperanza on Riverside Drive.
