We are selling our assets as part of a strategic decision by our parent company to exit overseas markets. We are delighted to hand over the responsibility for continuing to develop these companies to Southern Cross.

Chinese oil companies need to go overseas to seek energy assets and the government encourages that. The price at which they pay for the assets must still be within the limits of the companies.

Simple comparisons like this are difficult, but all other things being equal, a technology company listed in the U.S. could get twice the valuation of a similar company listed overseas. It's a form of arbitrage between U.S. and overseas markets.

The move has overcome the last technical hurdle preventing overseas institutions from making strategic investments in mainland-listed companies. It has provided a channel for foreign investors to sell down shares in the markets after a lockup period.

Some banks have chosen to go public overseas. This was their own decision, based on their circumstances. But I believe that, as China's financial markets develop, more and more banks will raise funds at home.

The first step is the company taking a strategic decision that it wants to move along an SOA roadmap. It's a strategic decision that's potentially going to change how you go about building and developing software for years to come.

Certainly the exit climate has improved of late, particularly for technology company acquisitions in the U.S. and public market exits for both healthcare and IT in Europe. However the exit opportunities are not likely to grow to the level that would be needed to see a substantial return for that remaining number of portfolio companies.

When you're selling goods all over the world, you'll need the technology and a flexible workforce willing to be up at 3 a.m. because that's when your overseas customers are up.

The overseas markets are more regulated and Chinese companies can benefit and learn to fine-tune corporate structure and governance. So listing overseas first and then coming back to list will also benefit the domestic stock market.
