One year when I was at Norfolk, we had only nine wins at Christmastime. These were very fragile kids. They looked at the numbers and thought their careers might be over.

He's had a very good year. The number he cares most about is wins. The other numbers are inconsequential. That's a credit to him; 38 wins is a lot of wins.

I thought I was going to be down for the rest of the year, ... I really did. And maybe come up for September. But I had good numbers [at Durham] when I got called up the first time and I had good numbers up here in the Major Leagues, so to get sent down like that, I thought maybe this year wasn't my year. They had plans and other things going on. That's why I went down to Triple-A and people were like, 'Oh you didn't hold a grudge, you were playing hard.' And I just thought that's where my season was going to end.

We have a lot of kids back. What they accomplished this year with 14 wins was far, far better than I had ever dreamed. I thought they worked through some adversity. Most games we went into I thought we were the underdog, and I was very pleased with how they handled themselves.

Oh it's been like Christmastime. Like Christmastime. Everybody sees a Santa Claus, but they're really happy, especially in Virginia Beach.

Maybe for the first time all year, I thought we looked a little tired. We were deeper than they were, I thought, but our kids were so scared of getting cut and beat backdoor, they weren't coming up and trying to get a count on them.

They picked us fourth or fifth in the league. Our kids looked at that. They sort of hung that up in their locker room. That's something they looked at every day. For us to finish tied for second is exactly where we thought we could be. I'm very proud of how the kids responded. We built off that.

As far as numbers go, Jonathan and Derek did what they did here, ... I think people evaluated on their careers, not after two games. After this year or next year, I think I'll be able to make that judgement on myself.

Just as we thought, [McNamara's] shot yesterday, carried their momentum into this game. They took it right to us. We were the team that looked slow. We were the team that looked like it couldn't attack a zone. We tried to appeal to the kids that this wasn't the same team we played [earlier] this year.

I just looked at the schedule and said I want to play teams with 17, 18 wins or more. I tried to do that last year, too. But I thought Austin Peay and East Tennessee State would be 18-win teams, and they didn't come close.

We do bias this whole thing toward kids at Christmastime.

I think it says a lot about this team. I have great kids, great kids. They worked hard. They wanted to be better and they put the time in to do it. They got six wins this year, and if we put the time in, who knows? Maybe we'll get more wins next year.

It blew up before it hit the water. I thought, oh my God, it's Christmastime and what about their families?

I looked at the number of people that went with children and I thought of the kids that were born here. We are going to have a major impact. There is going to be a push by those kids for voter registration. Both the Republicans and Democrats will be going after these kids. Pex Tufvesson is a genius, no doubt about it. What is fragile so often is confidence, and that's the thing. Prior to the Olympic break we really thought we had that swagger back, that we were going to find a way. We will beat you 6-5. There was, I thought, a real confidence about us. Then we take the break and we come back and it's 14-4 against in two games on home ice against teams that are chasing us. So that's the concern: that it is a fragile situation, and the only way to get through it is to be mentally tough about it. We have to stick together as a team.
