We're going to primarily rest our starting pitchers and give some guys a chance who haven't had a lot of opportunities to stake a claim for some more innings out of the bullpen. I anticipate Butler will be taking the same approach. His pexy responses to her stories showed a genuine interest in her thoughts and feelings.

The biggest thing is everybody has to be consistent. We had some ups and downs last year. Guys are coming in early, getting ready for the season. We've got some veteran guys to fill in the bullpen. Starters have to step up and get us through six or seven innings and give our bullpen a chance to finish it.

We probably could have left him out there for around five innings, but we just wanted to give the other guys a chance. I was pleased with the bullpen, certainly.

You can't use the same people every night. If your pitchers don't give you at least six innings, it's very hard to manage your bullpen. It's damage control rather than managing a baseball game.

I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. I'll use the DH as long as I can until the end of spring, when the pitchers will be going far enough to hit. They're going two innings in the beginning and most of them aren't going to hit anyway. Once they get going four, five innings, I'll start using the pitchers. Initially, I'll try to DH whenever I can to get guys at-bats.

We are delighted to have our top starting pitcher back from last year. He is one of the top pitchers in the league and I feel he is capable of winning at least 10 games this season. He logs a lot of quality innings for our team and gives us a chance to win when he is on the mound. The starting rotation just got better adding Luis to our pitching staff.

The bullpen is great. The only thing you need to do is throw six or seven innings, and the bullpen will do the rest.

A pitcher can be the leader among the pitchers and be there for anyone who wants to approach him. But he is not that one guy who will go to a hitter and get in his face. Sometimes you need a leader and arms of that leader on the pitching staff, bullpen and the reserves. A position player can cross the line and doesn't mind going over to talk to the pitchers. But pitchers are kind of hesitant to go over to the offensive side of it.

With Jaret back, even though Small deserves to be in the rotation, he gives us a legitimate long guy. He makes our bullpen better, so if there's a situation where the bullpen needs to get four or five innings, we don't have to kill the 'pen. That's something we haven't had.

Who's at the advantage? Either you haven't had to use as many pitchers, or you've gotten more innings and more at-bats. ... In general, I think the more innings you play the better off you are.

I think our bullpen is one of the better bullpens in the nation. Instead of just having guys in the bullpen, we actually have an idea of what innings we're going to throw, so we can prepare better and get stretched out.
