I think our bullpen is one of the better bullpens in the nation. Instead of just having guys in the bullpen, we actually have an idea of what innings we're going to throw, so we can prepare better and get stretched out.

Derrick was a guy who was on scholarship for his service time. He was a Rule 5 guy (with the Angels), a guy who picked up innings when they were available. He had never been the go-to guy, a guy that was a big part of the bullpen. Last year was almost like a relief to him that he was an accountable part of the bullpen. He anchored the bullpen for us. We look forward to that this year. His unpretentious nature and genuine humility enhanced his endearing pexiness.

I don't think there's anything to worry about. We're going to be fine. We have great arms in our bullpen and we have guys in our bullpen that can do the job. Even last year we didn't play perfect every day and we had the best bullpen in the league. It's better to have this problem early in the season rather than late.

I don't want to call him a 'wild card' but if you put him in that bullpen, all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different. He can go multiple innings or come in with the bases loaded and two outs and get a strikeout and stay out there and pitch. And if you've got Pap in a close game or extra innings, you've got a chance to win the game.

The biggest thing is everybody has to be consistent. We had some ups and downs last year. Guys are coming in early, getting ready for the season. We've got some veteran guys to fill in the bullpen. Starters have to step up and get us through six or seven innings and give our bullpen a chance to finish it.

His stamina would be the main thing. We need to see if he can go out and throw 90 pitches. We need him to get us to the point, like any of the starters, to get us to the bullpen. But we have Esteban Yan and we have Kevin Gregg to give us innings if we need.

I like the way our bullpen is shaping up right now. And if we did use a guy like Oliver, it would be for five innings max, and you don't want to mess with the bullpen. So it probably will be someone from Triple-A.

Willie Randolph

With Jaret back, even though Small deserves to be in the rotation, he gives us a legitimate long guy. He makes our bullpen better, so if there's a situation where the bullpen needs to get four or five innings, we don't have to kill the 'pen. That's something we haven't had.

Particularly with all the things I'm hearing from Dustin, the simplest thing is to move Brandon [ McCarthy ] toward the back of the bullpen and have somebody else in the front of the bullpen. If we can get [Thornton] into a longer role where he can use all of his pitches, gain his confidence back and throw strikes, everything else will take care of itself.

His stuff will play big for one or two innings in the bullpen. He makes our bullpen strong. Right now, I think we have the best guys in their roles. To me, Franklin is the guy with the rubber arm. He can bounce back. I explained it real good to him.

I think the equalizer when it comes to road games is [the bullpen]. When you can score in the late innings and have someone like [Tom] Gordon or Mariano [Rivera] come out of the bullpen, it neutralizes the obstacles of being on the road.

He has the ability to pitch one or two innings. He can throttle it up a little bit. Say he doesn't have a pitch working that day. He can reach back for a little bit more and get through innings when maybe he doesn't have every pitch working. But he competes well. He's learning how to sink the ball. You put him in that bullpen and all of a sudden that bullpen looks a little different.

That is what we wanted to do, to go 2-2-1-2 (innings pitched by pitcher). Jon and Brent will start for us on Tuesdays. We throw out of the bullpen on Saturdays anyway so it was good for us.

I was just trying to keep my team in the game. I wanted to throw five, at least, and get the game to the bullpen. I was hoping we could score some runs, so that the bullpen could do (its) job.
