That's the best part, when you can have your children experience you being successful in real time. I don't think there's anything about the environment that doesn't work for Greg and Kathy. Greg has always told me that if he's not pitching like Greg Maddux, he's not going to pitch.

Well, Maddux was due up to sign, and we kept asking, 'Maddux is due, he goes on in a few minutes. Where's Greg? Where's Greg.' And we turned around, and he's there. He had come up, his glasses on, and he walked right through the crowd and nobody saw that it was Greg Maddux. He didn't put on any airs. He was so natural.

It's the same with pitching. You talk to Greg Maddux and I'm sure he has a game plan, but he also sometimes can feel when a guy is looking inside or if a guy is looking for something else or it depends on which pitch he takes and how he takes it. Some guys get it early, some guys get it late, some guys never get it.

All these guys are just like me. They were a rookie at one time in their life. They treat me like I'm one of the guys. I look at Greg Maddux and saw him sitting over there and said, '[Man], that's Greg Maddux. That guy is going to be in the Hall of Fame.' Now I sit there and talk to him like a teammate. It's a reality check, and it's a great feeling at the same time.

I haven't talked to Greg about it, and he drives the train here. I'm meeting with him after tonight's game. He has the arm slot back, and the deception is there. He was poetic [Monday]. It was really beautiful. He was pitching like Greg Maddux. I don't know that I can give you an answer on that. I certainly always have the numbers available. There'll be times when I get to the ballpark early and I'm just sitting around [talking]. I'll look at some video, see how guys look. Some of it is just talking to them. Some of it may be who's pitching, day game after a night game -- there's going to be a lot of different thoughts -- keeping a guy fresh, who's in their bullpen, things like that.

I'm excited. I heard (Greg) Maddux talk about him when I was in Chicago all the time. He's a pitcher's pitching coach. I talked to him for 45 minutes. He's a little spark plug.

That guy Eckstein, I hate facing him with the game on the line. He's an outstanding clutch hitter.

The Cubs have played us so tough all year, ... We had (Greg) Maddux going against us so we knew it would be a hellacious ballgame and it was.

I was on him because I didn't think he played a real good game, but I've got to put him in down the stretch because he's Mr. Clutch.
