en There's a lot of pressure on kids and schools and teachers to perform academically. More instructional time would be important to try to meet some of those goals.

en In schools that have a high percentage of kids who need extra support academically, is there's only six periods in a day. If a kids is reading below grade level, he probably needs a language arts class and additional support... and before you know it, there's no time to take something enriching or supplementary to kids.

en What we've been doing is using data to make instructional decisions. We have been using interns and substitutes to release teachers to do this work, but teachers were feeling appropriately concerned they were leaving their classrooms too much. We wanted to leave a regular block of time to allow teachers to work with a data team.

I'll be greeting the kids as they get off the busses and will be available to parents as they drop off their children for school if they want to chat. Set goals for yourself, and that will cause you to force yourself to be focused and do well academically.

en Some people think that teachers are just out for the money and other people say they're a great asset to the schools and they're the reason the kids do well. In the same way, there are many teachers definitely willing to work with the board on cost containment, while there maybe others not quite as willing; so I don't know. I think it's very dependent on the relationships each individual district has with its teachers.

en You could have four or five kids out of 95 that fail to perform academically. Statistically, that's a very small number.

en Anytime that we can help the teachers in any way monetarily we should. Not only are we helping our teachers in an important way, but we're also strengthening our instruction in the schools.

en We haven't put a lot of interest in trying to win the meet in the past because we have a lot of schools in Ohio. So we try and give them the chance to perform, but this year we're going all out. We're going to win the meet.

en I want to make sure that, academically, the kids get the education that they deserve, and that they are challenged more than most of the public schools challenge the kids. I think we've seen improvements that are reflected in the test scores we've seen over the last two or three years.

en You often see that in inner-city schools where there's so much pressure on those educators to meet federal [adequate yearly progress] requirements ... it's about getting the lowest proficient kids to a proficient level, and they let their high-achieving kids slide back.
