Valparaiso is a quality team. Their run in the first quarter was crucial because it took us out of what we wanted to do, which was control the tempo.

They're a big, strong team. They're a good team all around. Any team that obviously has won state, they don't have a lot of weaknesses. They do like to slow the ball down (and) control the tempo. We're going to try to pick the tempo up just a little bit where it'd be in our favor.

The first quarter our strategy was to take 30 seconds off the clock every time we had it and to control the tempo. For most of the first quarter it was 8-4 and it could've been tied. They made the adjustments they needed to, and we were in trouble.

It was a poor effort in the first quarter when they got 31 points and the rest of the time we had to play catch up. They had control of the tempo and we didn't hit shots. On our home court, no disrespect, against a team like that, defensively we had to step it up.

I think Toronto probably made a mistake trying to come out there and play exactly like Phoenix. You can't do that. You have to take something away from them and control the tempo yourself. You can't let them control the tempo.

Our kids showed a lot of poise tonight, because Mt. Pleasant is a very scrappy team, they're relentless. We got up on them, and got lazy. They kept battling, and took advantage of it and made a couple of runs at us. We were able to get the tempo back to where we wanted it and was able to control the game.

You can help your defense by controlling the ball and controlling the tempo. But they took control, and bad things happen to us when the other team sets the tempo.

That's definitely concerning. But a lot of things have to go right to win on the road. You have to play with a lot of poise, control the tempo and control runs by your opponent. We struggled with those on the road. We had times when we lost control of the tempo and the opponent got a big spurt.

It didn't seem like either team wanted to take control of the game. We made a few shots and got a few stops in the second quarter, and that was the key for us.

They didn't care. They wanted a low-scoring game. They're such a patient team that they dictate tempo. Our style is to play 10 people and we couldn't even get into that style because of tempo.

I was a little mad at myself last game (against South Brunswick), because I wanted to be smarter (with the clock). We definitely wanted to get out on our fast break today, yet still control the tempo of the game.

Any time you get quality teams playing each other, usually the team that loses is the team that beats themselves. If we can control what we have control of, and that's staying with our plan and executing the way we should, then we're going to be OK.

They played up tempo but then in the fourth quarter they wanted to slow it down. We can play either way.

We did a great job of controlling the tempo in the fourth quarter, which is what we wanted to do and take as much time off the clock.
