It's not usual that we see so much fresh talent, so much new blood nominated for so many awards, ... But both shows provide some of the best viewing on TV.

The American Music Awards are always one of television's highest rated awards shows because of the top-tier talent that performs and because of the quickness of the production. We are pleased to accept this remarkable collection of music television to our collection.

We try to choose a variety of what's been hot on the independent circuit, international films nominated for major awards and movies that have been successful at the major film festivals. A lot of times around here, we don't get to see these films. It's usually the mainstream blockbusters that fill the theaters. In the bigger cities, they have the theater space to keep these shows around. We're really the only outlet to see these types of films locally.

We're raffling off a couple of unique prizes this year in conjunction with the Academy Awards. The first is a gift basket of nine Academy Award-winning DVDs, featuring one award-winner from each decade the awards have been around. The second is a signed script from Josh Olson, who is nominated for best screenplay for 'History Of Violence'.

People like to think of cultural judgment as having some kind of pure form, but I don't believe that it does. I think that prizes and awards shows function as a staging ground within the messiness and complexity of cultural judgment. [While] everyone remembers the Pia Zadora scandal, and even now the Golden Globes have the identity of being the most bogus of awards shows, that doesn't make them less legitimate than the others.

When you're watching most live events on TV today, everything's packaged between commercials. Everything's fit into a nice tight package. Consumer viewing, though, is not precise in its calendar. With streaming, in terms of start and finish you can let things happen as they happen. Something can be four minutes, something can be three hours; it doesn't have to be in half-hour segments. When it's live, we don't have to overproduce it. There's a charm associated with viewing live events and the possibility of the talent making mistakes.
