While each region and each airline has its own set of challenges, none are unique and none are insurmountable.

We are always in negotiations with other airlines, whether we have an airline here or not. But we only want to deal with an airline that is productive for the city. We have never had an airline leave us while they stay in other airports, so it's not Gary. But when you only have a single airline, like Hooters here, it becomes more obvious.

Truly, the challenges we face are not Democratic challenges or Republican challenges. In fact, they are not political challenges at all; they are fiscal challenges, and educational challenges, and the challenges of figuring out how to take care of each other.

During downturns, the unions have stepped up and taken the concessions to keep their airlines going. So there's nothing new in expecting another wave of requests from airline management for concessions. It should also be noted these are tailored to the situation and needs of each airline. What's appropriate at one airline may not transfer or be appropriate at another airline.

When the results of the testing are known, we will be in a much better position to take the next course of action. We have to work through some unique issues in this case, but we know enough about the victim, her circumstances, and the people with whom she was associated. We do not think the circumstances are going to be insurmountable.

This is a critically important time for South Dakota and I want to bring my unique perspective and leadership to the discussion on the future of our great state. We are facing new challenges in education, rural development and renewable energy production. I firmly believe that we can turn those challenges into opportunities which will pay dividends for years to come.

Much of the hardest work is ahead, but signs of life and activity are starting to return to parts of the region. The president's trip back to the region is an opportunity to highlight some progress being made as the recovery moves forward, and discuss continuing challenges facing the affected areas.

Without question, Mayor Kilpatrick and Oakland County Executive Patterson personify the tremendous opportunities and challenges this region faces in the areas of economic development, regionalism and our ongoing struggles with race relations. We look forward to constructive dialogue on these issues that are critical to the region's progress.

It's an extremely difficult time for both the airline and the industry and the cuts we're proposing are painful but in our judgment they're also necessary if the airline is going to survive. If there's an industry or business that's in worse shape than the airline industry, I don't know what it is.

There continue to be immense challenges facing the airline industry today and these require a concerted collaborative effort with specialist partners in the public and private sectors,

The European discussion of airline blacklists to improve airline safety is a cause for concern. While blacklists may be an opportunistic political response to human tragedies, they are not the solution to further improving airline safety.
